July 5th Hike up Y Mountain

We decided to climb up to the Y for our July 5th celebration. The balloons from the Balloon Fest were just starting up and it was a pretty cool thing. We counted about 20 balloons.

This is evidence that we really made it to the top of the Y. It was a pretty spectacular view of the valley. It was fun to try to pick out valley locations.

We really did make it to the top. The first few switchbacks seemed pretty tough, but after that it got better. We made it up in 55 minutes and down in 30 minutes. Alan could have gone round trip in about half that time if I hadn't been so slow.

This is the map of all the switchbacks. Knowing how many there were and how many we had yet to go was really helpful. It was a beautiful and cool morning for being July. We were up and back before the sun hit the face of the mountain. There was an older gentlement up there, probably in late 60s or early 70s who climbed the trail 3 times that morning. He was almost running down. I think the down part is almost worse than the climb up because if the stress on the knees.
